Does Uber Track ALL Your Miles?
(Hint: No)
Apps like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash only track "Online Miles". You are likely missing out on thousands of dollars in tax deductions from deductible "Offline Miles".

What Uber Doesn't Track
At bare minimum, you can write off the miles Uber tracks for you. But if you rely ONLY on their tax summary, you are underreporting and overpaying taxes.
The "Online" vs "Offline" Trap
Uber typically only counts miles when the app is "Online" or when a passenger is in the car. They often miss the crucial "Offline" miles that are still 100% tax-deductible.
Common Deductible Miles You Are Missing:
- Deadhead Miles: Driving back from a drop-off in a remote area to a busy "hot zone".
- Cancelled Trips: Driving to a pickup location only to have the rider cancel.
- Supply Runs: Driving to the store to buy water, mints, or cleaning supplies for your car.
- Maintenance Trips: Driving to the mechanic, car wash, or gas station (if purely for work).
How to Fix It?
The IRS requires "Adequate Records" to claim these miles. You essentially have two choices:
❌ Option 1: Reconstruct Later (Hard)
Try to dig through Google Maps Timeline history or use "Sampling" methods to guess your lost miles. Risky during an audit.
✅ Option 2: Live Tracking (Easy)
Use a simple tracker to log "Odometer Start" and "Odometer End" each shift. This captures EVERYTHING.
We built the Simple Pro Tracker specifically for this. It's free, browser-based, and helps you log those extra miles in seconds.
Gig Worker FAQ
Can I deduct miles if I take the Standard Deduction?
Yes! The "Standard Mileage Deduction" is for your BUSINESS expenses (Schedule C). It is separate from the "Standard Deduction" for your personal income tax (Form 1040).
Does DoorDash track my miles?
DoorDash provides an estimated mileage estimate during tax season, but it is notoriously conservative and only counts "Active" delivery time, missing your return trips.
