What the gas cost estimate includes
This calculator divides your trip distance by your vehicle's miles per gallon, then multiplies the gallons used by the price per gallon. For example, a 300-mile trip in a 25 MPG vehicle at $3.50 per gallon uses about 12 gallons and costs about $42.00 in fuel.
The estimate covers fuel only. It does not include maintenance, insurance, depreciation, parking, tolls, electricity, or the value of your time. Enter a realistic average MPG and current local price for a more useful estimate.
Fuel cost versus the IRS mileage method
The IRS standard mileage rate is not a fuel-price calculator. It is a separate method that may account for multiple vehicle costs when its eligibility rules are met. Compare the two numbers for planning, but do not treat the lower number as proof of which tax method you should use.
